An unidentified low observable aircraft seen on the ground and in the air at Kandahar, Afghanistan since 2007 may also been seen flying out of the US Marine Corps Air Station at Miramar in southern California.
The Miramar sighting occurred in early evening lighting conditions in August 2008. Witnesses of that aircraft say that the flying wing configuration aircraft is manned with a cockpit clearly visible
The aircraft was seen circling the Miramar station and then going into final approach over the Interstate 15 before disappearing on landing. The witnesses include a former US military pilot who now works in the unmanned systems sector.
Two potential images of the aircraft have been released in the past two months, the first by Unmanned Vehicles and the second by the Paris-based Air and Cosmos magazine.
The Unmanned Vehicles image, an artist’s rendition, shows the aircraft from behind on the ground and taxiing, and is based directly on a photograph taken by a ground viewer inside the Kandahar base earlier this year.
The Air and Cosmos photograph, dated to 2007, shows the aircraft in low level flight with its undercarriage extended and shows both the intake and upper forward fuselage in silhouette.
The unknown aircraft is powered by a single turbine engine with twin intakes located either side of the cockpit. The engine nozzle is identical to that sported by the Lockheed Martin Skunkworks P-175 Polecat; however that unmanned combat air vehicle demonstrator is powered by two Williams International FJ44-3E turbofans.
